Techniques for collecting data, testing hypotheses, and presenting conclusions are learned in the context of conducting a pilot research project. This course examines the broader issues and forces that affect the conditions of how design can be effective within typical organizations. Through exercises and application of frameworks to examine these forces, students learn to recognize and adapt design plans to changing contexts.

Master of Design (MDes) students interested in public policy and civic design can develop deeper expertise in social innovation by pursuing one of our certificates. In partnership with the Stuart School of Business, we offer this focused graduate-level coursework to help you gain detailed and valuable cross-disciplinary knowledge about the structure, finance, and success measures of public policy and philanthropy. Depending on your country of origin, we may require an official transcript evaluation from an independent organization like WES. Please note that three-year degrees or diplomas, not issued in the United Kingdom or as part of the Bologna process, must be submitted with a completed master’s program or top-up bachelor’s degree program transcript.

The Institute of Design created the country's first Ph.D. design program in 1991. The Master of Design (M.Des.) program is for students who want to achieve mastery of advanced design. These include communication design, interaction design, product design, strategic planning, user research, design methods, and systems design.

The MDes degree (including the MDes + MBA and MDes + MPA programs) qualifies as a STEM degree. International students who have earned degrees in STEM fields in the US may apply for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT employment for a total of 36 months. For more information, please see the US government’s Study in the States website. We do not require a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score for the PhD in Design program. However, if you have a GRE or GMAT score you would like to submit, we are happy to include that in your application evaluation.

When completing the Financial Affidavit of Responsibility Form, please read all instructions carefully to ensure that you have completed each required section of the form. Submission of this form is not necessary for the review of your admission application. Find your desired degree program below for a detailed list of application requirements.

Team techniques are emphasized, and formatted information handling and computer-supported structuring processes are used through the design process from project definition to information development, structuring, concept development, and communication. Students may take this class multiple times, non-concurrently, for a maximum of 12 credits towards their degree. This class introduces students to theories of communication from other academic fields for application in design.

Platform is an innovation strategy that provides a common set of standards to enable a variety of offerings to be built on top of it, creating higher value for all stakeholders involved. This course explores how platforms provide a base to accommodate many options that can support diverse contexts and user needs. This class aims to familiarize designers with the tools and techniques that are commonly used by quantitative researchers such as surveys and statistical analysis. Students will learn how to design, understand, and evaluate surveys and other quantitative research tools and techniques as well as how to use online survey tools in their own work. Covers the rhetoric of design case making using verbal, quantitative, visual, and spatial modes of persuasion.

ID ScholarshipsTuition scholarships are funded by ID to recognize students of particular merit. Carole and Gordon Segal FellowshipEndowed by Carole and Gordon Segal, the Segal fellowship supports an ID student of outstanding promise. All graduation certificates or diplomas issued in original language or English by the institutions attended must be provided along with your transcripts. Explore the history of The New Bauhaus and how ID has pioneered design and innovation through the eras. As an example, Chicago’s State Street—a high-density corridor in the heart of the city’s downtown loop—had the highest rate of vacancy on record in February 2024, according to news reports, amid an overall downtown vacancy rate of 23.5 percent.
